With the closing of the school year come the events that recognise student achievement in the many fields in which our students have engaged. Last Friday I had the privilege to witness our Year 12 Graduation and this week we will recognise the achievements of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and on 7th of December the Annual Awards Presentation for students at Year 8,9,10 & 11 will be held at the Starplex.
Year 12 exams concluded last week and moderation of results by the SACE Board is well and truly underway. The proposed release of Year 12 results is around 19th December. Our Year 11 students will finish their formal lessons this week after completing their final exams last week. Final assessments and reports will be prepared in the following weeks for all year levels. These results will be distributed on 13th of December.
Over the past two weeks, Year 7 students, from our district primary schools who are transitioning to our school in 2013, have been experiencing secondary school life. We have provided students with a snapshot of secondary curriculum offerings and practical areas that are not usually available in primary schools. On Monday we had all the Year 7’s attend and participate in a range of team building activities. These students also had the opportunity to meet with Ms Gerri Walker, the Principal of Gawler & District College. Our student leaders also played an important role in meeting the groups of students and assisting in the preparation of a sausage sizzle lunch.
2012 YEAR BOOK
The Year Book has been completed and is off to the printers. This year a committed group of staff led by Mel Geyer have produced this valuable record of events and achievements. The Year Book is a valuable reminder of your child’s time at school and something to look back at in time. The Year Book is full of colour and has a collage of photographs of all Homegroups, along with the many significant events throughout the year. What makes this more special is that it is the last Year Book as Gawler High School. After 105 years we will cease to be a secondary only school and with the amalgamation becoming a Birth to Year 12 school in 2013. This could well become a collectors item.
YEAR 12 GRADUATION
I always look forward to the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony to celebrate and recognise the achievements of the Year 12 students. Over the past five years we have seen the characters of our current Year 12 graduates develop and mature into fine young men and women who presented themselves in fine style to graduate.
Our guest speaker this year was Shane O’Donoghue who graduated from Gawler High in 1997. Shane presented an important message about persevering in life and never putting off opportunities and establishing goals.
Our 2012 Valedictory Speech this year was presented by Danni-Lee Jocey-Prior and Stevan Stanojevic who spoke on behalf of the graduating students about their journey over the past 5 years.
During the ceremony, awards were presented for Academic Excellence both in a traditional curriculum areas and Vocational Education.
Special Awards were presented including the Gawler High School Foundation Award for the Dux of the School in 2011. This was awarded to Kayla Gaskin and Samantha Dorries who achieved identical ATAR scores.
The ADF Long Tan Leadership & Teamwork Award was presented to Kiara Applebee; the Caltex All Rounder Award winner was Michael James; Governing Council School Leadership & Citizenship Award winner was Danni-Lee Jocey-Prior; the Principals Sports Award went to Stevan Stanojevic, and the Enlightened Achievement Award was presented to Matthew Kilworth.
Following the Graduation Ceremony the Formal Dinner was held at the Sebel Playford Hotel on North Terrace. The students looked splendid in their evening dresses and suits.
We were very privileged this year to have our first group of students from our Special Class graduating. In 2008 Gawler High established our first District Special Class. It was wonderful to see these seven students, who must be congratulated for their perseverance over the past five years to reach their goals and successfully complete their formal education and graduate.
This years graduates are also the last group of students to graduate at Gawler High School as a secondary school.
Congratulations to Alex Cowling Laboratory Assistant who was a Highly recommended award winner at the recent LMASA Service Awards presentation.
You are warmly invited to attend
